In this songwriting course, we will take a deep dive into the songwriting style of Taylor Swift. We will cover: - Song Structure Development (Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Hook, etc) - Song Story Analysis (Point of view, conflict resolution, conclusion) - Figurative vs. Literal forms of Speech - Storytelling and dialogue through song At the beginning of each class, I will present a clean, age-appropriate song that we will work together to analyze and understand. Suggested Writing Materials: - Notebook, paper, or digital pad (pc, iPad, etc) - Pen or pencil - Recording device such as voice memo on phone or iPad (optional but highly recommended)
Taylor Swifts catalogue of songs contain themes centered around love, romance and relationships. I will intentionally explore records from her earlier albums to avoid more mature or explicit references. But please be aware that in analyzing her lyrical content, we will most likely discuss subjects around relationships, crushes, dating, and heartbreak from a third-person perspective. Songwriting is about self-expression, creativity and story-telling. Students will not be forced to share details about any personal experiences nor will they be hindered. If any student brings up any kind of inappropriate subject I will redirect the class to age appropriate content and conversation.
