US Grade 3 - 4
The Institute for Excellence (IEW) in Writing method by Andrew Pudewa teaches beginning writers to understand how to create a Keyword Outline and then write a paragraph by using just the outline. A keyword outline is taking every sentence in a paragraph and just writing 3 of the key words in a list form. The learner may use any numbers, symbols, or simple drawings they wish. Example: The man walked his huge dog down the street. My Keyword outline for this sentence may be: man, dog, street I do this for each sentence in the paragraph in list form, and then I rewrite the paragraph in my own words. What this teaches the learner to do is to be able to find the key words (important words) in a sentence and then rewrite the list outline into a paragraph using their own words. An advantage is that the struggling writer does not have to think of what to write. It is a model for beginning writers to learn the writing process. In this class, we will learn how to do a Keyword Outline from a paragraph model and then rewrite it into a paragraph just by using the outline and putting the sentences into their own words. Their key word outlines will first be shared, the learner will then write the paragraph, and their paragraphs will be shared with the class. What a paragraph contains will be explained. Prior knowledge: Your child must be able to read at an appropriate age level, be capable to print the words, and know how to write a full sentence. Please have them bring paper and a pencil to class. Class Rules: We mute so we do not talk over anyone, we are kind and respectful, and if we have a question or comment, we raise our hands.
