In this one-time class, we will go over basic dictionary skills. We will talk about what a dictionary is, why it’s important, the parts of a dictionary, the parts of a dictionary entry, guide words, choosing the best definition, and more! Every learner will have several opportunities to participate by reading, moving words to where they belong alphabetically as well as into which page they would belong on by looking at the guide words. Students will learn how to use glossaries or beginning dictionaries, both print and digital, to determine or clarify the precise meaning of key words and phrases. (CCSS L.3.4d) Learners will consult reference materials (e.g., dictionaries, glossaries, thesauruses), both print and digital, to find the pronunciation and determine or clarify the precise meaning of key words and phrases. (CCSS L.4.4c and L.5.4c)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
