Class Experience

This class can either be taken to expand on the ideas learned in How to Train Your Pet with Classical Conditioning, or as it's own stand along lesson. In this class students will be introduced to the topic of Operant Conditioning, which is a form of learning used in behavioral psychology. They will learn how Operant Conditioning can be used to train pets. We will learn about the topic through short videos, active participation in a group experiment, and a discussion about training pets. We will have a discussion of some ways we could use Operant Conditioning to train different kinds of pets and talk about how we might even use it to train a goldfish!

Learning Goals

By the end of class students should have an understanding of what operant conditioning is and how they could use it to train a pet.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Psychology was a large part of my Child Youth and Family studies program in University. When I had the chance to take an elective I chose a psychology course, and I have never stopped being fascinated with the brain. I believe that it is more important to teach children how to learn than it is to force them to learn. By teaching children about the brain I aim to build life long learners who understand how to strengthen their own mind.
