US Grade 8 - 10
In this class, students will learn about a highly effective study and learning system known as the SQ3/4R. Both systems promote active learning, critical thinking, and problem solving skills. They also help students become inquisitive learners because they have to ask questions about the reading or of a class lesson as part of the "Q" step. I found that many students say they have to "study" but then when I ask them how, they say they "don't know". This class will provide students with study techniques and suggestions based on research to help them study for English, math, and science courses. In each week, students will learn modifications of the SQ3/4R based on the subject they are struggling with. In week one, students will be introduced to the SQ3/4R learning system, and they will learn how to study for English. They will watch a pre-recorded video and will read a handout that will help them apply the system to their own classes. In week two, students will be introduced to the SQ3/4R learning system, and they will learn how to study for math. They will watch a pre-recorded video and will read a handout that will help them apply the system to their own classes. In week three, students will be introduced to the SQ3/4R learning system, and they will learn how to study for science-based courses that require learning of technical terms and formulas. They will watch a pre-recorded video and will read a handout that will help them apply the system to their own classes.
