Please note: this class is a derivative of “How to Start a Game of Chess”. I am now dividing the class into two separate age groups. If you want your siblings in the same class, I completely understand, just please do realize the difference in ages 6-12. I also recommend enrolling the older child in the younger class if that’s the case. In this class I will teach chess for beginners. I will show learners how to set up a chessboard, and teach the basic rules of chess. I will teach the names of...
Students will learn how to set up a chessboard, the names of the chess pieces (king, queen, bishop, knight, rook; "castle", pawn), who goes first, how each piece moves and captures.
I enjoy playing and teaching chess and inspiring a passion within children to learn. I learned to play as a very young child and believe chess teaches children pertinent problem-solving strategies that help them throughout their lives. The ability to think one's way out of a problem is an essential life skill. Studies show that children who learn chess do better academically, so the science behind the learning is there. I taught chess to elementary-level students at different schools as part of their after-school program. I taught chess strategies, tactics, and sportsmanship to help future leaders solve problems in chess, in their classrooms, and throughout their lives. ❈ Aided in the development of problem-solving skills inside and outside of the classroom. ❈ Improved sportsmanship and success through chess.
Chess. Learners will need an actual chessboard for this class, as it is tactical. Students will pick up the pieces to place them on the board as I guide them to practice moving them. Electronic versions are not recommended due to the tactical structures involved in actually setting up the board (online versions pre-set the game).
50 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
