What's included

Homework
1-2 hours per week. 10-15 practice problems are assigned after each session. Worked out answer keys will also be provided so that students can check their work and find any mistakes. Homework will take approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour to complete.

Google forms quizzes can be taken in each section; they are auto-graded and optional. No login required.

Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
Solving equations is one of the very basics of Algebra. This class will help your learner develop a strong foundation in how to solve algebraic equations and develop math reasoning skills.

Based on parent feedback, I'm offering this class for students who need more help learning how to solve equations.

I'm an active and engaged teacher with my students. I look forward to providing support throughout the class as needed.

Topics covered:

Week 1
Session 1-combining like terms
Session 2-distributive property
Session 3-solving one step equations with one variable

Week 2
Session 4-solving two step equations with one variable
Session 5-solving equations with fractions

Week 3
Session 6-solving multi-step equations with one variable
Session 7-solving equations with variables on both sides

Week 4
Session 8-literal equations

To keep things as organized as possible, I post the sessions for the week all at once on Mondays at 12 pm EST.

All announcements and assignments will be made through the Outschool classroom.

Each session includes the following:
Recorded video lessons (I am teaching the lesson on video.)
A printable notes handout
Practice problems
Answer key showing all worked out problems, not just the answers
Online Google quizzes (no login required) that I have created specifically for this class; students will be given instant feedback when they submit their answers. Students may re-take the quizzes as many times as they’d like.
Opportunity to ask me follow-up questions--in the classroom (public to the class) or in a private Outschool message (only visible by the student, parent, and myself).

Since this is a flex class, students can participate during the days and times that work best for them.

No prior knowledge of solving equations is required.

Learners should have a general understanding of integers (adding/subtracting/multiplying/dividing positive and negative numbers) prior to taking this class.

Be sure to read my reviews, and send me a message if you have any questions.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to solve linear equations in one variable, including equations with coefficients represented by letters.
Students will be able to explain each step in solving a simple equation.

Is your learner failing math?

Does your teen say things like…

I can’t do math!
I’ll never get this.
I’m going to fail this math class!
I’m so dumb.

Well, you’re in the right place.

HI! I’m Mary Kennedy, certified math teacher, and I love working with students who struggle with high school math and doubt that they can do it.

I've taught Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 and have more than 20 years of teaching experience. My Master's degree is in Learning Disabilities.

In my classes, students connect their learning to critical thinking skills (includes reasoning, analysis, and perseverance) and growth mindset (“I haven’t learned this YET.”).

I strive to make the math concepts accessible to struggling learners.

Help your teen regain confidence and learn the skills they need to pass Algebra.

Don’t let math continue to disrupt your family’s life.

About Mrs. K.
I do life in a tiny tourist town with my husband and three kids (when they're home from college).

Twice, my family has had the unique and wonderful experience of hosting students from Southeast Asia in our home and community. We have maintained friendships with these students and their families for several years now through technology, despite our geographic distance.

I love working with students from every country and encourage their language skills in my math classes.
