How-To Research: Beginners Guide and Practice Camp

In this ongoing class, students will learn about basic research skills in order to become better at independent research!

Class Experience

Each class will focus on a simple researching concept such as: choosing topics, organizing note taking and ideas, asking good questions and identifying what makes an online article excellent. Students will practice with support how to take great notes and organize their researching so it makes sense and achieves the goal of their topic choice. They will be encouraged to conduct their own research on a topic of their choosing.  They will be given the opportunity to share ideas, thoughts and questions throughout the process!  
Winter Session:
Week One: June 9: Choosing and clarifying a topic
Week Two: June 16 : Asking good questions and building an organizer
Week Three: June 23 : Online search engines and using key words
Week Four: June 30: Paraphrasing and building a report

Learning Goals

Students will learn a variety of ways to research and note take a non-fiction topic.  They will read, discuss and retell in  whole group format within the classroom time frame.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
As needed, the teacher will use safe practice internet searches to enhance the students learning experience for gathering information. Parents will be given a list of possible internet sites the teacher plans to use at least 24 hours before the start of class so parents can review each one. Such sites will include kid-friendly search engines such as kidsSearch.com, kiddle, kidtopia, and kidrex!

Students should come prepared to write and note take!
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
