In this one time class, students will learn to quantify and differentiate different note lengths and rhythm! We will learn what each note looks like and how they are all related, then we will learn to count them on a beat, then we will play a game called Rhythm Detective or Rhythm Ruler! Students will be able to understand beat vs. rhythm and how to apply those skills to counting music notation value! Rules of Rhythm Ruler: Teacher Maya will speak different rhythms over a 4 count beat and learners will have 20 seconds to write down what they think Teacher Maya said. Whoever is right gets a point, the most points at the end is the rhythm ruler! There will be slides and visual aids for the class, questions are welcome throughout the entirety of the 65 minutes, and any comfort items/stim toys/etc. are welcomed as all students deserve to feel comfortable as well as learn music! Students must be able to add and subtract by 1, 2, and 4. Students should (not must) be able to read sheet music.

Bachelor’s Degree in Music or Theatre or Arts from New York University
Hi! I'm Teacher M.!
My name is Maya Maloney-Hupert (they/them). I am a musician and educator with a bachelor's degree in music education from NYU. I am a professional clarinetist and have been playing for 15 years, and have been singing for about 11. I was also a martial artist for 10 years, specializing in TaeKwonDo. I am ranked as a third degree black belt. Not only did I do martial arts, but I am a competitive dancer and aerialist.
I am excited to offer a variety of classes in music, crafts, and movement!
I have student taught in 2 different NYC public schools and had my own classroom from 2021-2022. Pre COVID-19, my time was spent teaching clarinet, vocals, and other instruments to students as young as 4 and as old as 14. Since the change, I have taught online lessons, general music, music history, and various forms of world music and its cultural impacts.
I have also played clarinet freelance professionally for NYU as well as through commissions. Similarly, I have taught kids and adults with special needs how to do basic martial arts and some music and movement classes as well.
I teach kids and adults of all ages online lessons for safety and comfort in a pandemic-addled society.
I believe music and movement are integral parts of development and self acceptance. Kids learn to make music and their agency and independence flourishes as well. To be able to make mistakes effectively, as well as have a collaborative experience learning music, allows students connect to the world around them more. I want to be able to help with that.
Movement is also crucial to growth! COVID-19 has impeded movement opportunities for our youth, which in turn is also emotionally stunting them. Giving students a safe place to release energy and gain strength can help them emotionally as well as physically.
With the pandemic and online learning being the primary form of education nowadays, I would love to help bring music, movement, and artistic expression to your child!
