This eight week course is designed to give young filmmakers with a visionary eye a chance to study the magic that goes into producing memorable films and TV. This class is taught by a renowned Hollywood writer, producer, and director!

Join us for an exciting 8-week online course designed specifically for high school students interested in the dynamic world of TV and film directing! This course offers a comprehensive introduction to the creative and technical aspects of directing, empowering students to bring their unique stories to life on screen.

Course Objectives:

Understanding Directing Fundamentals: Explore the essential roles and responsibilities of a director, including script analysis, visual storytelling, and working with actors.
Hands-On Projects: Engage in practical assignments that encourage you to create short scenes, develop directorial concepts, and experiment with different styles and techniques.
Film Analysis: Study iconic films and TV shows to understand directing choices and their impact on storytelling, pacing, and audience engagement.
Collaboration and Communication: Learn how to effectively collaborate with writers, cinematographers, and actors, honing your leadership and communication skills.

Learning Goals
Students will grasp the essential principles of directing, including shot composition, blocking, and pacing. By the end of the course, students will be able to analyze & critique scenes from various films & identify directorial choices that enhance story.
Students will learn how to develop a unique directorial vision and effectively communicate a story through visual media. Students will create a short film project that demonstrates their ability to convey a narrative through directorial techniques.

Lesson 1:
Week 1: Introduction to Directing
 Overview of the directing process.
Understanding the role of the director.
Discussion of famous directors and their styles.
Assignment: Watch a selected film and write a reflection on the director's choices.

 How to read and analyze scripts.
Identifying themes, characters, and story arcs.
Workshop: Break down a short script into scenes.
Assignment: Write a short analysis of a chosen script.

Week 3: Visual Storytelling
 Basics of shot composition and framing.
Understanding the visual language of film.
Activity: Create a storyboard for a scene.
Assignment: Present your storyboard in class.

 Introduction to camera types and equipment.
Techniques for shooting scenes (angles, movements, etc.).
Workshop: Practice basic camera operation.

Devan Renea is a WGA writer. She holds an MFA in creative writing, a bachelor’s degree in film, and a GradC in education media design & technology. Devan was previously a writer for OWN’s legal drama series, “Delilah”, including the season finale. Devan was also a writer and script coordinator for the critically acclaimed Hulu limited series, “Mike”, starring Moonlight’s Trevante Rhodes. Devan’s other writing credits include work on the NAACP award-winning series “Queen Sugar”, produced by Oprah Winfrey and Ava DuVernay; the Saturn-award winning CW series “Stargirl”; and Freeform’s Teen Choice award-nominated series “Famous in Love”. She is the CEO of Boss Up Productions, a multi-platform production company. Devan is a also Screenwriting Instructor for nonprofit organizations, Kids in the spotlight, Hurston Wright Foundation, and Empowher Institute. She is a regular guest lecturer at both Howard University and Full Sail University, as well as a dedicated online instructor through platforms Varsity Tutors and Native Camp. Devan has taught her renowned directing and writing for TV class all over the world, including the US, South America, Asia, and Africa!
