How to Paint with Acrylic

Everyone can learn to paint with acrylics! In this video series, artists Melissa Forman and Paul Richmond demonstrate the steps to create a realistic landscape painting in acrylic. Broken up into 10-minute exercises, this course will help you learn the tools, techniques, and skills of this popular medium. Students will create one original painting from start-to-finish during this course, each lesson containing another step in the process.


What You’ll Learn: 

- Fundamentals of Acrylic Painting: Students will go through steps and techniques of creating an original acrylic landscape painting. Starting with sketching and underpainting, students will learn foundational skills that they can build on in the future. 
- Diverse Techniques: Students will learn various painting techniques like sketching with paint, underpainting, and color blocking. Students will also be able to observe how two artists approach the same subject matter, encouraging a development in individual artistic sensibilities. 
- Weekly Practice: Experience the improvement in your skills with exercises and projects. The sky’s the limit once you learn the basics!

There will be no live meeting for this class. This course consists of nine 10-minute video lessons. Each week, three new lessons will be released, and students can participate on their own schedule, pausing the videos as much as needed to learn at their own pace. Students are encouraged to share their artwork and join in discussion on the class page. The course takes three weeks to complete. Paul will interact with students who share their artwork each week, providing feedback, encouragement, and support within two days of student submissions.

Materials: 

You are welcome to work with any drawing materials you'd like, but here's a list of everything Paul and Melissa will be using in this series:

- Cold press watercolor paper 
- Acrylic paint - primary colors (red, blue yellow), white, and black are all that’s necessary. - Additional colors if possible: brown, green
- Acrylic paintbrushes - variety of sizes
- Paint tray or palette paper
- Masking tape
- Wood panel or other smooth surface to tape paper onto
- Paper towels and cup of water
