During every class, the teacher develops a connection with students talking about their favorite movies, directors, and type of films they love. In the course, I will be speaking in Spanish, and the class content also is in the Spanish language. The student's primary goal is to create a two-minute (Minimum) film made with a smartphone. The course is a daily session for one week with a total of 5 sessions. - Welcome - Group check-in (A question about themselves related to movies) - Warm-up...
Foundations for screenwriting, visual storytelling skills, camera angles, editing techniques and transitions, foundations in sound. In the end, students create a film of their own and enjoy the experience of making their film using just a smartphone.
I have been teaching digital media to students from 2nd to 5th grade. Students love the dynamic of making a film. As a film professional, I love teaching the kids about these subjects; I'm very passionate about them. Although, from my perspective, I engage with the students by talking about movies and how fun is to create them, I also enjoy building collaborative groups and leaders who work together to create something new and unique.
Every class there is an assignment for the students to reinforce the core activity. Class One: Communicate emotions using photos. Class Two: Come up with an idea for their film project and draft a screenplay. Class Three: Prep your movie, start filming Class Four: Edit your film. Final touches, audio, music, color correction. Class Five: Finish your film and turn in!
Students must own a smartphone or a Smart Tablet for the class. I recommended editing software that is free and to download from the proper website. During the course, I will send a list of equipment that is appropriate for students who want to embark on smartphone filmmaking. However, it is not mandatory to buy gear that is just a list of tools for them to use.
At the beginning of the class, students have the choice to share the work done from the previous day assignment. This can measure their level of success in class. The final project for the students will be the creation of a short film of two minutes long. I love to create reflections with students and encourage sharing their opinions and ideas about the topics in class, but also what they love about their learning experience.
5 hours 50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Please be advised that I will be using third-party apps, which require parents' approval. Please make sure you follow parental guidance. Most of the content will be screen shared and no account creation is need it. The apps will also be screen shared as part of a demonstration. The teacher always advises students to check with parents that the teacher mention in class. Sometimes the teacher talks about certain films that are not age-appropriate for them; however, the teacher will never show these films' video clips. The content is curated and reviewed for the students. I regularly check the material I show in class with https://www.commonsensemedia.org/, a great tool for parents and teachers to understand what is appropriate to show kids and what age.
