How to Listen and Follow Instructions
Listening and following instructions is difficult sometimes. Learn about this important skill and other reading strategies by listening to a fun story! The story will be sent to the student after our last class (i.e. fourth class) on Kindle format.
What's included
Class Experience
In a flexible schedule class, students are able to complete the class asynchronously. The class will be presented via weekly recordings which will be posted to the classroom area. Questions and discussion topics will be posted in the classroom area during each week as well so that students will have plenty of opportunities to interact with myself and other students. Additionally, students are encouraged to share what they would like to learn. I will add the questions to the class recordings. Topics to be covered include the importance of listening and following directions, and the concept of cause-effect in stories. No experience or special knowledge is required to take this class. Throughout our four weeks together, students will learn the following: Week 1: -Preview of a story that portrays character(s) that experience difficulties listening to instructions. This will allow students to practice their predicting skills. -Discussion Topic of the week (posted in the classroom area for interaction)- Discuss predictions made about the story and evidence to support answer. Week 2: Teacher will introduce the vocabulary words related to the story and read the story. During the reading, the teacher will be asking comprehension questions that will prompt students to think about how the characters are feeling, their problems, and the solutions to the problems they face. -Discussion Topic of the week (posted in the classroom area for interaction)- Teacher and students will reflect on the story (i.e. problems characters faced and the solutions presented in the story, how the story made us feel or made us think, connections to our life experiences, etc...) and review key vocabulary words. Week 3: -Teacher will teach concept of cause and effect and present examples from the story where the concept of cause and effect is used. A handout will be sent for students to apply what they learned about cause and effect and how it is used in the story. -Discussion Topic of the week (posted in the classroom area for interaction)- We will be discussing the handout that was completed. Week 4: -Teacher will review the strategy used by the character that helped him listen and follow instructions and teach how to make a craft that would help us remember the strategy. -Discussion Topic of the week (posted in the classroom area for interaction)- We will have the opportunity to share the craft we made.

Teacher expertise and credentials
In my 17 years of experience as a teacher and now as a psychologist, I have met many children who experience difficulties listening and following instructions. Stories are a powerful way to teach many things! In this class, I will be implementing teaching strategies not only to help children develop better listening skills but also foster their reading comprehension.
