Class Experience

Microsoft Excel is the premier spreadsheet application. It's importance in education and beyond is invaluable, with many employers of various types looking for people with knowledge of Excel. As a Middle and High School Science Research Teacher for the past 18 years, every student research paper submitted had at least one spreadsheet included for data collection and display. In this class, the basics of Excel will be taught from starting and naming a spreadsheet to simple formulas and graphs.

Day 1 - Setting Up a Spreadsheet
             Naming Columns and Rows and Entering Data
             Manipulation of Data in Columns and Rows
             Setting Parameters of Cells such as Font, Colors, Borders, and Printing Margins
             Sorting

Day 2 - More Manipulation of Data
             Basic Formulas
             Graphing
             Presentations

Learning Goals

Students will learn how to use Excel for school work and personal use, whether it be for funds tracking or hobby records.

Supply List
Students will need access to a copy of Microsoft Excel installed on their laptops or desktop computers. Students without copies can still take the class, but the learning will not be as thorough with being able to follow on their own.

    I am a Science Teacher with 24 years of experience in public schools. I have degrees in Marine Science, Natural Science, and Earth Science Education. Science is a passion that I have had since I was a boy. Learning Science should be fun,.... because SCIENCE is FUN ! I teach anything related to my degrees, such as Astronomy, Space Science, Marine Biology, Environmental Science, Rocks and Minerals, Weather, Plate Tectonics, etc. with added courses on methods of data presentation such as Excel and PowerPoint. I have also taught Advanced Research Methods such as DNA Extraction, PCR, and Gel Electrophoresis. I am a huge nerd with Lord of the Rings, Marvel, Image, and D.C. Comics, and Science Fiction being my hobbies, along with reading, hiking, fishing, drawing, and model building. Having tagged sharks for 33 years, I am something of a "Shark Nerd" as well. I have taught science to students in grades 5 - 12, ran science fairs for elementary, middle, and high school students, and taught them presentation skills.
