Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
Beginner Level
Did you know that art has its own alphabet just like language? It's called "The Elements of Art" and there are seven elements: line, shape, color, value, texture, form, and space.

In my art class, your child will get to explore these elements through fun projects inspired by famous artists like Picasso, Matisse, and Van Gogh. We will also learn about these artists through class presentations and children's storybooks.

During class, we will start with a review of the art elements and a brief explanation of the project with a demonstration or step-by-step presentation. Then, we will learn about the artist and their story. At the end of class, your child will be invited to share their work and talk about their favorite and least favorite parts of the project, as well as share three things they remember from the class.

Here's a sneak peek of what we will be doing each week:

2/19/24 Week 1: Your child will learn about the art element of LINE by creating an animal drawing using only one line, inspired by Picasso. They will finish the project using watercolor pencils.

2/26/24 Week 2: We will focus on SHAPE by working on a construction paper collage that explores positive/negative and geometric/organic shapes, based on Matisse's work. Again, we'll finish with watercolor pencils.

3/4/24 Week 3: Your child will learn about COLOR and create a color study inspired by Kandinsky, using watercolor pencils.

3/11/24: VALUE will be the focus, and we will work on a project based on the work of Franz Marc. Your child will be introduced to Tints, Tones, and Shades using watercolor pencils.

3/18/24 : We will explore TEXTURE by creating a textural self-portrait inspired by Vincent Van Gogh. Your child will use watercolor pencils to complete the project.

3/25/24 Week 6: FORM will be the focus, and we will work on a construction paper collage inspired by Cezanne. Your child will be introduced to colored pencil techniques to create the illusion of 3-dimensional forms.

4/1/24 Week 7: Finally, we will focus on SPACE and create a landscape inspired by Grandma Moses. Your child will use watercolor pencils to complete the project.

We will then repeat the sequence with new artists and new projects.

Please note, not all students work at the same pace. If your child doesn't finish during the live class, they are encouraged to complete their art independently.

We will start on time, so please make sure your child is ready to go at the start of class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
As a homeschool mom, I'm excited to share that I've been homeschooling for 19 years and have plenty of experience under my belt. I'm also an artist and photographer with a passion for fine art, photography, and art education. I love teaching children's art classes and have done so both privately and through local after school and children's museum programs.

My work has even been featured in Parents Magazine and on numerous photography blogs! I'm all about finding connections between things that may not seem related at first glance. To do that, I like to break things down into their simplest parts and look for similarities. This helps me turn seemingly complicated projects into simple, step-by-step lessons that are easy for kids to understand.

I also have a great sense of humor and love to infuse silliness into my lessons and artwork. I appreciate the irony in both art and life and try to bring that lightheartedness to everything I do. So, whether you're just starting out or have been homeschooling for a while, I'm here to share my knowledge and make your homeschooling journey a fun and creative one!

For parents whose children attend traditional schools, you may be wondering how my experience as a homeschool mom and artist can benefit your family. Well, as an art educator, I strongly believe that creativity is an essential component of a child's education, regardless of whether they are homeschooled or attend traditional schools. Incorporating art and creative projects into your child's learning can help them develop critical thinking skills, enhance their problem-solving abilities, and encourage self-expression.

Furthermore, my years of experience in teaching children's art classes have taught me how to create fun and engaging projects that your child can enjoy even outside of a homeschool setting. So, whether you're looking to enhance your child's education at home or simply want to find ways to incorporate more creativity into their day-to-day lives, I'm here to share my knowledge and passion for art education with you and your family.
