I attend a premier liberal arts college in Ohio as I work on an art history major and a studio art minor. My background in art history means that my classes are created with an art historical twist- all my methods are based on tried and true techniques and practices that master artists and art theorists have used. Your student will not only be learning about techniques that are fundamental to art, they will be examining examples of these techniques by artists. The juxtaposition of these examples is meant to inspire and solidify the importance of the fundamental art techniques I teach.

My values as a teacher are simple- I wish to create an open environment that is accepting of everyone regardless of skill level, inspires students to continue to practice art, promotes creativity, and supports students in their artistic journey. Even students who are not aspiring artists have much to gain from drawing and should consider taking art courses, including improvement of hand-eye coordination and hand dexterity skills.
Learners will need to finish their obsessive drawings before the final class in order to participate in the critique, HOWEVER, no formal homework will be assigned and learners should be able to complete the drawing with the three hours of in-class time we'll have over the course of the week. Learners' obsessive drawings should fill their entire paper or board medium, utilize at least three different media, and two observational elements.

***MATERIALS*** Note that with the pandemic, if your learner is unable to acquire a large paper or drawing board, they may instead complete two drawings on a standard sheet of sketchbook paper (between 8.5”x11” and 11”x14”). The only required material for this class is a large drawing paper or drawing board, between 18" x 24" and 36" x 48", to complete the obsessive drawing on. The paper or board should cost no more the $5 USD per sheet depending on size and brand, but you may want to purchase up to three sheets. Learners will be encouraged to bring all the art supplies they have to the page, from dry media such as pens, pastels, crayons, and pencils to wet media such as inks, watercolors, and markers. A in-depth syllabus with a materials guide will be provided along with a Critique Guide.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
To remove the stress of what is sometimes a very daunting course of study, your learners will not have tests, quizzes, or formal grades in the class. Instead, I utilize positive verbal critiques to provide feedback and encourage improvement. However, if grades are requested I will provide them via rubrics that will suggest a grade. Learners progress will be gauged by the completion of their assignments, execution of techniques, and their class presence (being on-time, listening when I am speaking, and how they communicate with peers).
5 hours per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
