Class Experience

Through demonstrations, exercises, and feedback, students will learn to realistically draw and shade cats using photos. The reference photos of cats I provide upon enrollment may be used, but students are encouraged to email me cat photos they have or find and love and want to use for their drawing. (Yes, a photo of your own cat may be used!) Each class begins with a skill building exercise we all do together. Then students work from their reference photos for the remainder of the class period, and I give feedback to each student individually. Students may use pencil, colored pencil, charcoal, or pastels. This class is suitable for beginning to advanced students.

Lesson 1: Drawing cat faces (proportion basics) and fur shading skill builder; Draw from the cat phot you have chosen - individual feedback will be given to each student

Lesson 2: Drawing cats (whole body of cat) in proportion and fur texture shading skill builder; Draw from the cat photo you have chosen - individual feedback will be given to each student

Lesson 3: Drawing realistic cat eyes and learning to see a cat like an artist skill builder; Draw from the cat photo you have chosen - individual feedback will be given to each student

Lesson 4: Using negative space to draw a cat walking skill builder; Draw from the cat photo you have chosen - individual feedback will be given to each student

Learning Goals

Students will learn fine art techniques for drawing and shading as they work from photos. They learn tools that will allow them to see what adjustments are needed if their drawing looks "off" to them or not as realistic as they would like. Most importantly, they will learn how to let go of the fear of a drawing turning out "bad" and find joy in the process of drawing.

Sources
If a student doesn't share with me before class the photo of a cat they would like to draw, I will ask them if they have permission from their parent/guardian to Google photos and copy and past the link in the chat window because I use their reference photo as I provide feedback. If the student does not have permission to search up cat photos, please let me know and I'll share my search on Pexels and they can pick a cat photo from there that they want to draw. This takes up valuable teaching time, so please be sure I have been emailed the reference photo of the cat(s) your child would like to draw before class. Please be sure to have that photo printed out for your child to reference during class or show your child how to toggle on the computer between the photo and the live class.
