Beginner - Intermediate Level
𝗣𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗲, 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 In this course, learners will practice a range of different digital art skills to create their own unique cat. They can choose to create: a cat from their life, a warrior cat, or another cat from media. This series will prioritize an illustrated style as shown in the banner image but learners may make changes to reflect to their own unique style. These goals aim to enhance both technical skills in digital art and personal expression through the creative process. This class is nurturing and relaxed so that learners can build confidence in Procreate and use the skills they build in session for future projects. This class includes a mix of guided tutorial, step-by-step, and prompt-based drawing. I am here to guide artistic discoveries and help you figure out which methods and styles work for you. This course values experimenting with process over achieving perfection. I strive to give multiple references and allow learners to approach pieces at their own pace if that is what they wish to do. Therefore, while my approach is relaxed and flexible, learners will gain skill and confidence in navigating the many facets of Procreate. Our course will be divided into four main pieces: • Sketching • Lining • Coloring • Finalizing It is important to note that each learner works at a different pace. Depending on pace and experience, some stages may take longer than others or some work may need to be completed outside of class. I am available to provide feedback through messaging if a learner requires more help. 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: Introductions: Instructor will greet learners and learn about their week Main Lesson: Instructor will screen share and demonstrate tools and skills Art Show Case: Instructor will provide supportive and gentle feedback. Goodbyes: I will let the learners know what we will be studying in our next meeting and wish them a wonderful week! 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀: 𝗠𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴: • For general inquiries and messages, please be advised that I will do my best to reply within 24 hours. 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗽: • Please note, I log into all my classes ten minutes early. During that time, I will do my best to assist you if you require technical help. However, I need to begin class at the start time. If you are unable to connect, we may need to address technical issues after class. 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘀: • All of my classes operate under Outschool’s Standard Refund Policy: Refund within 24 hours of payment until your next meeting or lesson access begins. More information on this policy can be found here: https://support.outschool.com/en/articles/4626920-class-specific-refund-policies-and-automatic-refunds • Payments for classes cannot be transferred to future weeks. • If your learner misses a class meeting, you are not entitled to a refund. In the event that class is missed, a recording of the class will be available for you in the classroom after the session has been completed. • This policy applies when you have notified me of an absence ahead of time; the payment holds your seat and gives you access to the recording. • You may withdraw from the class and re-enrol if you do not wish to be charged during an extended period of absences. You may also opt for the pause feature but please note a pause does not hold your seat. If you wish to have your seat held, you can opt to pay for the subscription. • Please note that due to safety policy - in the event where you are unable to attend the first class you have registered for, the recordings of the class will become available after your first live attendance. • There are no discounts issued for siblings and/or the registration of multiple classes. 𝗣𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: • If a student is late, I will greet them and continue the lesson. I will not be able to reteach content. Once the session has ended, the recording will be available in the classroom. 𝗭𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝗦𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: • If you have not completed the Outschool Learner Verification process, I will require you to begin every class with your webcam turned on. You may turn it off once you have been verified by me, if you wish. • Learners who are not verified and do not connect to a webcam will be put into the waiting room until they are able to reconnect to the meeting with a working camera. If I am unable to verify a learner during the class time, I will follow-up with both the adult who registered the learner and Outschool's Trust and Safety Team. • If a class is full, I may review “mute”, “unmute”, and “raise hand” options for effective classroom communication • I may call on learners and help facilitate conversation; I ask that only one person speak at a time. • Learners may use the “chat” feature to communicate • If learners are not able to use the "chat" feature in a respectful way (ie. they spamming the chat or being inappropriate), the chat may be set so that learners are only able to speak with the instructor. • If a learner is unable to adhere to these guidelines or is being disrespectful, they will be given up to two warnings. If a learner continues with disrespectful behaviour they may be put into the waiting room or be asked to leave; they can follow the rest of the class through the recording posted in the classroom.

Syllabus
4 Lessons
over 4 WeeksLesson 1:
Sketch and Select
In our first session, we will begin by selecting references which will inspire our drawings. There will be a guided tutorial on how to construct and draw a cat. This lesson will prioritize sketching brushes and the instructor will discuss the brush tools. Learners will also be introduced to the select, resize, and warp tool in Procreate to modify their sketch. The learners will create a series of sketches of their cat and select one that they would like to move forward with.

Lesson 2:
Line and Base
Once our cat sketch has been selected, our next goal is to use stabilized brushes to create a clean and crisp lines for the cat. We will review how to lower the opacity of the sketch layer and rename layers for optimized file organization. We will discuss the importance of line weight, variance, and texture. Then, we will learn two methods to taper our lines so that the fur will appear natural within the illustrated style. Finally, we will create a solid base to use for painting the cat.

Lesson 3:
Shade and Color
Our cat will primarily include eye shading and drop shadows which we will cover first. Learners will learn how to use blending modes to accomplish this. Then, we will decide what kind of base colors and markings our cat will have. The teacher will demonstrate how to create the effect of stripes, patches, and spot for our cat. We will learn how to give our cat dynamic coloring with contrasting colors. We will also duplicate our canvas so that learners can use the same lines for different coats.

Lesson 4:
Finalize
This session is all about finishing touches and final questions. Finalizing can be a personal experience depending on art style, so the instructor will demonstrate a series of ways in which learners can customize their piece and hone their artistic voice. This will include: coloring the line art, adding glows, and/or a small drop shadow to give additional context to our cat. We will finish by sharing our creations, names, and any additional information about our cat!

Hello!
I'd like to thank-you for taking a moment to learn more about me.
My name is Rae and I have been a full-time instructor on Outschool since 2021. I am passionate about arts, media, technology, learning, and the way that they correlate with each other. I offer drawing classes and social clubs based on special interests.
I received my BA in Theatre and English from the University of the Fraser Valley. During my time there, I directed and performed in a number of stage productions including: Once in a Lifetime by Moss Hart; Arabian Nights by Mary Zimmerman; and Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. Theatre is an important aspect of my life: it has taught me to be confident, how to collaborate with others, and how to manage multiple projects with close deadlines. These are transferable life skills that have helped in every aspect of my life.
My approach is encouragement and reciprocal curiosity. I take a genuine interest from the input of my students because they offer bright ideas and I firmly believe that we learn and grow from each other. I am happy to hear about the special interests that your learner is passionate about and want every child to feel celebrated for who they are. My classroom rules all revolve around the idea of safety: be kind to each other, yourself, and the space you are working in.
I like to spend my free time tending to my plants, cooking healthy food, and playing video games such as Stardew Valley, Genshin Impact, and Final Fantasy.
