Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
Class Experience
In this ongoing course, students will meet twice a week to learn how to write a five paragraph essay on a specific topic.

In each class, I will model different aspects of paragraph writing. Each week, a writing skill will be taught in isolation from the other parts of the essay. Students do not have to attend the previous sessions or later sessions. Students may join and leave at any time, choosing to work on the skills they need to practice as they wish.

The breakdown of each class will be:

5 min review of parts of an essay
5 min discussion on the part of the day
10-15 minutes of class practice
10 minutes of individual practice with teacher check-in and feedback
5 min wrap up discussion of part- what was easy, what was harder

The skills that I will teach are are listed as follows:

Week 1: How to brainstorm, map, and outline
Week 2: How to write an introduction with a hook and a thesis
Week 3: How to write body paragraphs with focus on transitional phrases
Week 4: How to write a conclusion
Week 5: How to revise, proofread, and edit

The topics will then cycle back through in sequential order. I will update the listing to reflect what will be covered each week.
Students WILL NOT write a congruent essay in this ongoing course; each skill will be covered independently from the others.
Students will be given topics to choose from, or they can use topics of their choice.

Once students feel confident enough with this beginner course on five paragraph essays, students may then enroll in my more advanced course that adds more detail to each paragraph.
Learning Goals
Students will practice essay writing skills, focusing on organization and other writing traits.
