How to Cope? Mental Toughness and Resilience With Mr. Sloth!

Sloth wasn't always so mentally tough but his friend Fox taught him a great tip that helped him learn to overcome challenges. Together, we'll read "The Resilient Sloth" and learn how Sloth approaches problems.

How does Sloth become so resilient?  What does resilience mean?
Why would a 10/10/10 rule help me become mentally tough?

We'll answer these questions together during our reading of "The Resilient Sloth," a wonderful new book by Charlotte Dane! In addition to discussing the book and engaging in reading comprehension activities, students will be guided to reflect on times when they've had to build their own resilience.  Teacher's friend Mr. Sloth will also make an appearance (a very cute stuffed toy that will interact with us to keep everyone entertained.)

Warm-up and Pre-Read
Students will introduce themselves and discuss what they think mental toughness and resilience means. 

Read Aloud:  The Resilient Sloth  
We'll read "The Resilient Sloth" together and discover how he became so mentally tough.  We'll ask engagement questions at several points.  

Discussion and the Mental Toughness Workout
Students will answer reading comprehension questions about the story.  Next, we'll introduce the three steps to overcoming a problem and the Mental Toughness Workout.  

Role Playing Game
Students will reflect upon times in their life they've been resilient and role-play future scenarios and how mental toughness and the 10/10/10 rule might help them overcome future challenges.

- Students will define the meaning of the terms 'Mental Toughness" and "Resilience"
- Students will recognize a FAIL as their First Attempt in Learning
- Students will relate the 10/10/10 rule to judge the impact their problem/challenge has
- Students will examine scenarios they face in life and be able to apply mental toughness to overcome them
