50 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
In this one-time class, students will learn what it takes to become a published writer in today's competitive market. I'll discuss the concepts of self-publishing versus traditional publishing and give important tips for making the best choices for getting your work into print. Students will become familiar with the concepts of literary agents, slush piles, editors, subsidiary rights, and royalties and will learn how to avoid scams aimed at writers. I will provide resources for finding reputable agents and publishers, as well as a list of contests and publications open to teen writers. I'll reserve the end of the class for student questions and will be happy to discuss my own experiences as an author published by HarperCollins, Abrams, Penguin, and international publishers. I recommend having paper available for jotting down notes and questions.
Learning Goals
Students will learn the pros and cons of self-publishing versus traditional publishing and will become familiar with the steps involved in becoming a published writer.
