*****THERE IS NOW A SPRING BREAK CAMP VERSION OF THIS CLASS BEING OFFERED. PLEASE SEE https://outschool.com/classes/how-to-be-a-money-smart-kid-spring-break-camp-6sgCCcnw?sectionUid=76e65c94-ff94-47a7-abbb-461938f4133a&showDetails=true ****** In this class, we will be using the Financial Peace Junior materials by Dave Ramsey (with permission) to learn about six important financial literacy concepts. Each class will begin with an introduction of the day's topic through the presentation of an illustrated story. From there, topics will be explored through a variety of activities. Day 1: The Value of Work. Today we will use activity sheets and discussion to think about how we earn money. We will brainstorm a list of chores around the house and create our own chore chart to begin working and earning our own "bucks". Day 2: The Danger of Debt. On this day we will do an activity together that will explain and demonstrate the concept of debt and the true cost of borrowing through credit to buy things. We will finish with a simple craft activity to prepare our Give, Save and Spend envelopes. Day 3: The Good we can do with Giving. Today, we will complete a worksheet and some fun activity sheets to learn about the importance of generosity. It will be time to check in on our chore jobs and get "paid" for our work. Also presented and discussed today will be the class giving project, funded by the "bucks" we're earning from chores. We will finish with a game called "The Giving Game". Day 4: Behaving with Integrity. In this class, we will play a game called "Three truths and a lie", to demonstrate how dishonesty affects how people view our integrity as a person. We will finish with activity sheets that further illustrate the concept of integrity. Day 5: The Superiority of Saving. A "Saving Contest" game/activity will establish the benefits of saving today, and also simply teach the concept of compound interest. Learners will choose their saving amount and interest rate and together we'll find out who is the saving winner! Continuing to check in on our Chore Charts and getting "paid"! Day 6: The Satisfaction of Spending (Wisely!). In this class, worksheets will help us figure out how to create a wise plan to spend our money. We will also be tallying up our Giving envelopes and voting on the class donation item. Those who wish to share their other envelope totals are welcome to do so. Learners will need to be competent in basic math skills (addition, subtraction) and be comfortable using a calculator.
Learning Goals
Students will learn about the value of work as the responsible way to earn money, the pitfalls of debt, the importance of giving as a member of society, making choices of integrity surrounding money, the value of saving money, and how to spend wisely.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
While the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace Junior materials are not explicitly religious, there will be mention of concepts traditionally included in the Christian faith. These include: Being a cheerful giver, the importance of gratitude, and awareness of how preoccupation with money and the irresponsible use of debt can be detrimental to a healthy life.
Camera Policy: While I recognize that some children are timid to be on camera, it's my firm belief that keeping videos on during class yields the maximum benefit for all. Children who stay off camera are far less likely to participate, to engage with the teacher and with others, and will come away from class with a sub-standard experience. Also, at a time when our society has been experiencing increased amounts of isolation, keeping cameras on provides the children with that sense of community and inclusion that they so crave. Therefore, my studio policy is that cameras will be ON during class. If your child requires a medical exemption from this requirement, please submit this in writing before the start of class.
Supply List
Printed materials (worksheets, activity sheets) will be distributed to learners before the start of class. At home, students will need 3 plain envelopes of any size (traditional business is best), a calculator, a pocketed folder or binder to store worksheets, a clear plastic page protector, an erasable marker and a collection of decorating tools (pencil crayons, markers, stickers). By the end of the course, learners may have earned "bucks" that will have been placed in their saving, giving and spending envelopes. I will be matching the total giving bucks with a charitable donation which the students will vote on, so that their giving envelopes will actually bring about a sense of accomplishment. I would encourage parents to consider rewarding their students at the end of the course by matching the students' saving and spending envelopes with actual cash (or perhaps make a deal with students for a lesser exchange rate, ie. one "buck" = $.50). Parents should be aware that this course will aim to establish a system of earning money through household chores, and be prepared to consider instituting this in their homes after the course finishes.

Teacher expertise and credentials
My name is Mrs. Kent and I come from Ontario, Canada. I am a homeschooling mom to five kids, and I've been teaching in and out of my home for 22 years, usually in front of a group of singing children! On Outschool I will be teaching music classes (music production/composition, history, theory, general, voice), crafting (scrapbooking, origami) and money literacy.
I have a Bachelor's degree in Music and have just completed graduate studies in Music Education (July, 2020). I'm a conductor with the Hamilton Children's Choir, for their very youngest singers (4-6 years old), although in the fifteen years I've worked with this organization, I've conducted older children up to age 12, and a boys choir which involved both changed and unchanged voices. For eight years I also conducted the children's choir of a large homeschooling music organization here in southern Ontario. I worked with their youngest singers, a choir for children aged 7 to 12. I've taught private voice, piano and brass (cornet/trumpet) since 1999. Finally, my other most favourite music teaching 'gig' was as an online music history teacher with the homeschool organization Landry Academy, which I did for two years and really enjoyed.
Money management is another passion! Math and music have a curious yet strong relationship (note values are essentially fractions!). I am a graduate of Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University and have worked closely with three of his certified money coaches over the past 20 years. I was thrilled to receive a full endorsement and permission to use his Financial Peace Junior materials as the basis for my "How to be a Money Smart Kid" class which is available in weekly, twice weekly, three times weekly and week long intensive camps.
I believe that children show us what they are most interested to learn in, and that natural curiousity is the best seasoning for effective learning. Mutual respect in the classroom is essential and building warm relationships with students is what I love the most about teaching.
