Class Experience

A learning theme based in Star Wars will highlight values that enable effective communication. 
These values are: 

- Patience, letting our emotions and thoughts sit with us, letting them form and shape a bit before we express them. We think about how we express them in a way that helps others understand, and giving others the opportunity to speak.

- Empathy, to listen and understand to what other people are saying independent of what we think or how we feel and letting that understanding inform us.

- Kindness, to know what kinds of tone, words, behaviors and expressions make people feel safe and happy, and to use them to let them know we want them to feel ok.

1. Guidance for discussion and roleplay mechanics will structure activities that require teamwork and simulate interdependent relationships. 

2. Regular social scenarios practice our social and emotional development all the time, for example in conversation we require patience to know when it is our turn to talk. That said, to engage learners in a world led by their own enchantment can facilitate personal reflection and offers the opportunity to look at these skills from a different perspective. 

3. Students can create, interact and express themselves in a small group, with guided practice, and amongst peers connected by a shared interest

EXAMPLES AND ILLUSTRATIONS 

                        “For my ally is the Force, and a powerful ally it is” – Yoda 
Sith like to be dark, and stormy, and dramatic. They think that all of their power comes from inside them. Jedi like to slow down a little, they think about how they feel, and they learn that their strength comes from all the people who support them as well as themselves. 

What this looks like in practice:

1. We need a way to travel across the galaxy and the temple shipyard will build a ship for us. Compromise is an essential part of designing your own spaceship, for example the bigger it is the slower it will go. Can we make these choices together? 
2. Students will be given the space to express themselves, listen to others and build on ideas together through discussion, for example learning about Jedi history, or deciding on a lightsaber color. 
3. Need to get your lightsaber crystal but these ice caves feel like a maze? Trying to find the great library of Ossus in the middle of a great and wild jungle? Jedi initiates should expect a challenge, you will bring your unique skills together in order to make it through.

IMPORTANT
While this class will facilitate social and emotional learning, it does not directly address mental health and wellness. Although mental health and wellness, such as day-to-day stress or anxiety, may be related to a student's social and emotional development and experience, that is not the focus of this class.
Currently, I am a graduate student in Anthropology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, USA. I research historical systems of education. I teach with full responsibility an undergraduate class called 'Introduction to Peace Studies'.

Before this I worked as a teaching assistant in the United Kingdom for students with special educational needs in an elementary school setting. I would spent most of my time as the primary instructor for one student with Autism and ADHD in English and Math alongside running small group workshops for social and emotional development. Additionally, I have contributed to specialized curriculum support in writing and geography and I volunteered as a research assistant for a developing University program intended to create spaces for the discussion of philosophy within elementary schools and I joined an ongoing institutional research project on special educational needs inclusion.

I got into teaching through my experience before and during my undergraduate college years. I spent a year teaching English as a foreign language at a high school in Thailand and a summer doing the same in India. I spent three years working part-time in outreach and community education programmes for my University. After graduating I spent two years as a kindergarten practitioner before joining an elementary school. 
No homework, although students who want to are very welcome to continue learning outside of class. For example, drawing pictures, researching Star Wars info etc. They are equally welcome to bring this work with them back into class.

Moderated violence is present throughout Star Wars media ranging in ratings from G to PG-13. However, the age group for this class will be 7 to 11. This is a non-violent space. Role-playing violence and the use of violent language is not allowed and will not be encouraged. In the event that students innocently mirror what they have seen in film or TV, the role of Jedi as scholars, explorers and peacemakers will be highlighted.

This is a secular space. While some people practice a religious faith inspired by the Jedi from Star Wars, this class will remain separate from that. Fun and fantasy all the way!
