How to Answer Questions in Complete Sentences (and Why It's Important to Do So)

In this one-time class, learners will be taught the importance of answering their school assignment questions in complete sentences and will learn techniques to ensure that their responses to those questions are clear, concise, and complete. First, the importance of answering in complete sentences will be explored. Students will learn that complete sentences lend detail, clarity, continuity, and accuracy to their responses. They'll learn that proper sentence structure and unambiguous language allow readers to easily comprehend their answers. The class will participate in a short writing exercise to highlight the benefits explained. Students will also learn that answering in complete sentences will help prepare them for future academic writing, especially formal essays. Next, students will be taught ways in which to properly and effectively write an answer to a teacher prompt. They'll learn some grammar fundamentals (e.g., beginning an answer with "Because" does not constitute a complete sentence). Students will be taught a "mirroring" technique, in which they identify keywords within the teacher's question and then essentially repeat the critical parts of the question in their responses, (also known as "putting the question in the answer" or "turning the question around"). Finally, they'll learn my "So What?" approach for responses that require more than one sentence. This is an excellent tool for helping students expound upon and clarify their responses, and it will help prepare them to explain and analyze text evidence in formal essays. In this class, students will practice answering questions about well-known fairy tales and other popular stories (e.g., the Harry Potter book series). They may also use other books that they're currently reading as they practice answering questions in complete sentences.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Karyn O'Connor. I'm a freelance editor and copywriter as well as a professional voice teacher and acting coach. Here on Outschool, I teach group classes and tutor in English Language Arts and French grammar and vocabulary building . . . plus a few other classes on subjects of personal interest to me.
I was born and raised in Canada, where I was educated bilingually (English and French) all the way through university. I earned an Honours double Major BA in Psychology and French Studies from a bilingual university (York University/Université York) in Toronto. In case you're wondering: nearly all my teachers and professors were from France, so my accent is more French than Québécois.
I have a Master's in Publishing degree, I'm a member of the Editorial Freelancers Association, and I'm an American Writers & Artists, Inc. trained copywriter with professional freelance experience in copywriting and editing website content, sales copy, and nonfiction and fiction book manuscripts. in addition to owning Karyn O'Connor Voice & Acting Studios, I own an editing and copywriting business - Creative Copy & Editing - which is based in the United States. My clients consist of businesses, individual brands, and publishing houses.
As a former home schooling mother of four children for eight years, I've taught a wide variety of subjects to my own children, as well as to middle-school and high-school students at a large homeschool co-op. I've been teaching on Outschool for five years, and I hope to help support your learner's academic needs. My passion for language and writing inspires my small group classes and private tutoring in English Language Arts (grammar, spelling, literary analysis, writing, reading, etc.). I also teach a Story Time class in which I read my favorite children's books to young learners. I'll be adding my own children's fiction book to my library soon!
I'm really looking forward to getting to know you and your student and to helping him/her/them along his/her/their path to learning!
Best,
Karyn
