Class Experience

The teacher will start the class by asking students if they have ever read any of the Pete The Cat books and then introduce Pete the Cat with a prop. Next, the teacher will read the book "Pete the Cat: I Love my White Shoes." The story will be read interactively and the teacher will encourage the students to sing along with certain parts of the book and also guess the various colors Pete's shoes will turn as he steps in different types of things such as blueberries. After reading, the students will be asked a few comprehension questions about the story and will be asked to respond two ways: verbally and with thumbs up, thumbs down. Next, the teacher will briefly discuss what it means to retell a story and ask students to aid her in retelling the story as she uses fun shoe props to keep students engaged. Students will then have an opportunity to ask questions about the story. In addition there will be a brief discussion about the moral of the story or lesson that can be learned from Pete's experience with his shoes and how he reacted to what happened to him in the story. Lastly, the students will fill out the worksheet that should be downloaded from the file for this class. The worksheet will be completed with guidance from the teacher as time permits. Students may need to finish the worksheet after class with the guidance of an adult.

Learning Goals

An important goal for emergent readers is being able to listen to, comprehend and a retell a story to better understand what they have read and apply that knowledge to lifelong learning. In this class, students will improve their reading skills by listening to and singing along to an engaging, upbeat story, that involves a lesson about Pete the Cat staying calm when things go wrong. After the story, students will learn a brief overview about how retelling a story works as the teacher retells this story using props. Lastly, the students will complete an activity involving a worksheet to extend their learning from this class.
Whether your child is finishing Kindergarten or entering Kindergarten in the fall, this lesson covers several standards of the National Common Core for Kindergarten including: Literature and Speaking and Listening.
*Please note we will be talking a lot about colors so it would be beneficial if your child knows his/her color before this class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
As a former Kindergarten teacher, I know how important it is to model a love of reading to emergent and beginning readers to keep students on task. It is also important to cover topics that are mandatory to teach in a school setting. I base reading lessons off of standards from the National Common Core. I try to deliver engaging, age appropriate lessons to my students to combine both aspects.
