Class Experience

US Grade Preschool - Kindergarten
In this summer camp class, we will practice talking about our feelings and learning about calming strategies and problem-solving strategies to use when we have BIG feelings.
This interactive class will use visuals and props and will include learning through games, songs and activities where students will participate by answering questions, singing along and playing games.

Each day of class will start with songs and finger games and a story to get comfortable. We will then move onto learning activities where children will actively participate with movement, pictures and play to learn about naming feelings and practicing calming strategies to use when we need them to move through our feelings.

On day 1: We will go over the names of common and not so common feelings and children will have a chance to share about their experiences. We will read a story, sing a song and children will participate in a feelings game and activity.
We will talk about all feelings being OK to feel and how we will learn strategies throughout our classes to help us to process and to stay safe, calm and kind.

On day 2: We will review our talk of feelings from the previous week through pictures, sharing and songs. We will then work on learning what a calming strategy is, and we will learn and practice different calming strategies. Through pictures and a game, children will have a chance to see pictures of strategies, to practice doing them and then complete an activity to share which ones they use or want to try.

On day 3: We will review feelings and calming strategies from previous classes through a story, songs and sharing. We will then introduce the concept of self-regulation. We will practice learning to STOP and THINK before you DO. We will play many games to practice this concept and talk about how we can use self-regulation when we have big feelings.

On day 4: We will review feelings and calming strategies from previous classes through a story, songs and sharing. We will then introduce the concept of problem solving. We will show pictures and practice strategies we can use to solve a problem or find a solution. Children will play an interactive game and do an activity to practice problem solving.

On day 5: We will review feelings, calming strategies, and problem-solving strategies through pictures, songs and a story. We will play an interactive game where children will hear different scenarios where someone has a problem or big feeling and will get to pick what strategy makes sense to use. We will review a visual poster with calming strategies and problem-solving strategies and children will be able to have a copy of both of these charts to use at home after this class session.
