This is a course where teens and myself will simply socialize. This is to help ease the feelings of isolation and loneliness. I want this to be a safe space for teens to talk about their feelings, what's going on in their lives, and simply share about themselves. The conversation is open and can take whichever direction the class decides (within APPROPRIATE and SAFE boundaries, of course). I will use my questioning techniques to help keep conversation going, and will use my compassion and...
Students will strengthen their abilities to socialize, empathize with others, and will gain a sense of community while socializing with myself and others in this course.
I have been working with children and teens since I started college. I have an immense passion for mental health awareness and advocacy, since I have been through some struggles myself. I think that, now more than ever, it is important to socialize. I want to give teens an outlet to talk about their "highs and lows" and foster a sense of community. I have experience mentoring children and teens one-on-one, and am studying to be a School Counselor at the graduate level currently. I want to use my passion for lending a listening ear and caring heart to create this safe, inviting space for teens to share what is on their minds and hearts, as well as their interests and passions.
No official homework is assigned, but students are encouraged to reflect upon the socialization that occurred during class and apply positive aspects of it to their lives.
Learners may want to bring a journal to document any important findings with. However, this is not required. No other materials are needed. Any change in this will be brought to the learners' attention immediately.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Learner progress in socialization will be assessed informally through observation and anecdotal notes (if requested by learners and their families).
30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Please notify me of any potential triggers for learners in advance so that they can be avoided. If anything sensitive ever comes up, I'll be sure to handle it professionally and appropriately, and will notify both learners and families of any issues that may arise. I don't anticipate this, but I want to be sure that all families know that learners will be kept safe at all costs.
