*PLEASE NOTE: A drawing template has been supplied, and should be downloaded BEFORE class starts. You will find the link as you enter the Outschool “Classroom”, near the bottom of the page. Please download the file FROM THE IPAD OR IPHONE, being used for the class, so when you click the files, it can be saved to the “Photos” application. Please come with the template in the photo library. Students will learn how to draw a Rock Crab using Procreate, one of the most advanced, yet simple and affordable drawing applications available! The class will be taught by award-winning artist and photographer, Bryan Niven, as he breaks down his step-by-step process, of layering color, texture, shadow and highlights. Please refer to the “Learning Goals” below to see process details. This class is live, and will utilize both face-to-face, and screen-sharing technology through Zoom. This will allow students to interact directly with the instructor, and see his actual process while drawing on his iPad. As students draw, they will also learn about the incredible Rock Crab found along the coast of California. Studies show that students retain information better when they learn about a topic while drawing.
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to draw, through a series of steps. These steps include, layered-coloring, texturing, shadow and highlighting, as well as digital sculpting. These steps will take them through a process of hand-drawing/painting, making selections, and using blending modes, with layers, in Procreate.

Supply List
It is recommended that students have an iPad, and compatible stylus. Though an iPad compatible with the Apple Pencil is highly recommended, it is not needed, as long as they have a stylus, or are very comfortable with advanced finger painting/control. On the iPad you will be using for class, click the “Procreate” link above, and scroll down to “compatibility“, and it will let you know if your iPad is compatible. If you want to use/purchase Apple Pencil on your iPad, click the link labeled “Apple Pencil”, and verify your iPad is listed as compatible, and whether the first or second generation Apple Pencil will work. The other styli listed, (from Adonit), are great options, that work with almost any iPad, as well as Procreate. If you have any questions or concerns about styli, Procreate, and/or iOS devices for this class, please let me know. Please also note that Procreate is also available for iPhone, with the listed styli from Adonit, and that a student could take this class using an iPhone and one of the stylus options suggested.
