***Please request a date and time if this class interests you - It will not be regularly scheduled*** Hour of Code™ is a nationwide initiative by Computer Science Education Week and Code.org to introduce millions of students to one hour of computer science and computer programming. This lesson introduces the core CS concepts of coding and programming, as well as simple debugging techniques. We will be using blocks, or a visual programming language, which lets users create programs by arranging program elements graphically rather than textually. Using this block programming method to introduce core CS concepts makes the knowledge more accessible to inexperienced students. Students will be introduced to basic programming. ***Nothing needs to be downloaded or installed for this class. All that is required is a web browser.***
Learning Goals
Define “coding” and “computer science”
Identify key computer science vocabulary
Make connections between computer science concepts and the real world
Identify places to go to continue learning computer science and coding

Teacher expertise and credentials
**If you don't see a class and time that works for you, let me know! I'm more than happy to create classes for other engineering and technology topics or set up sections around your schedule.**
Hi! My name is Justin! I have an extensive background in technology. I've worked in government, first in the US Army as a telecommunications technician and as a satellite controller. Then I had the amazing opportunity work for the National Science Foundation's Antarctic Program as the satellite communications engineer at McMurdo Station. I lived on the ice for eight months in the winter!
In the Army I taught my young soldiers everything they needed to know for our jobs. And here at home before the pandemic I was starting to teach classes at my local Makerspace.
I am a Maker. I love learning how things are made, discovering how they work, and fixing them when they break. I have a desk filled with Arduinos and other gadgets. We aren't going to be in a classroom together, but we can learn a lot about how things run by learning how to program them.
I'll be posting classes for these topics, so keep an eye out for them! And if there's anything else you're interested in, let me know! I'll see what we can do about it.
