Description
Class Experience
NEW CHALLENGES EACH WEEK! Please note: Each week of the Hot Wheel Vacation Club will provide new challenges and fun based around the same STEM concepts of: energy, aerodynamics, resistance, momentum and mass. Prior attendance in other camps is not necessary. Come and join any of our camps to learn, play and explore. *Having your own Hot Wheels cars and track are not required but having some kind of moving car and track (or something that can act like a track like cardboard) will greatly...
The main STEM learning outcomes of the class are: 1) creative problem solving through engaging, exploring, questioning, explaining, elaborating and evaluating 2) persisting even when encountering an unexpected and difficult challenge (Growth Mindset) 3) recognizing opportunities for improving the design even after you think you're "done" 4) using creativity and imagination to generate and extend a design beyond an initial idea 5) implement Next Generation Science Standards, Common Core Standards for Mathematics
As a mom, I have played with Hot Wheels throughout my kid's elementary years. As a teacher, I have taught this unit of study to fourth grade students, and have adapted the curriculum to fit ages 3-9 years old as well.
None
(Hot Wheels can be purchased at stores like Target, Walmart and Amazon for about $20). All Camp Weeks will need: Two or more Hot Wheels cars Straight tracks (or something that can act like a track like cardboard, cookie baking sheets) Clamps or something to secure a ramp to a shelve Stacked books or raised platforms of various heights (such as a coffee table, a desk, a bookcase, pillows, countertop, or a kitchen table) Items to attach to the cars: coins, paperclips, erasers, Playdoh etc. Masking tape Scrap paper or Post It Notes Specific for Week 3: balloons (not yet filled with air), rubber bands, scraps of paper or 3x3 sized Post It Notes, masking or painters tape, Items to jump over like stuffed animals, pillows etc.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
No formal assessment however I give feedback from teacher observation during the class on how to improve their design.
3 hours 45 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Some students may need help putting together their track and gathering supplies like tape and blowing up balloons.
