Horses in Mythology and Folklore
Class experience
US Grade 3 - 5
Ancient humans were amazed and inspired by horses — the animals show up in many folklore traditions: from the Greeks' Pegasus, to the Longma of China, to Árvakr and Alsviðr who were said to pull the sun across the sky each day in Old Norse myth. Students will learn of stories about mythological horses and "equinesque" figures (centaurs, pegasus, etc.) from various ancient cultures. They will gain insight into the themes, mythological tasks, and special powers attributed to these horses....
- Students will understand the basics of the role of myth and folktale in culture. - Students will learn the name and place of origin of five examples of "types" of horses in myths from around the globe (flying horses, water horses, etc.) - Students will learn about qualities such as particular powers, tales, legends, or origin stories of the example horses.
I study equine-human interactions through a lens of ecopsychology, which includes exploring the ways that human imaginations relate to horses and other non-human animals in mythologies and folktales. I hold a BA in Studio Art/Photography and Psychology, and am a photographer and Montessori assistant teacher. As an educator I have experience teaching learners pre-K through teenage years.
1 file available upon enrollmentA print-out where students can sketch scenes from the stories or make small notes about each character as they are introduced will be provided. Pen, pencil, colored pencils, or thin markers are recommended for filling in the print-out.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
