Owning a horse is a big commitment of both time and money. The purchase price is usually the more affordable aspect of horse ownership; feed, stabling, health care, and equipment costs add up and need to be paid on an ongoing basis. How big an expense is owning a horse? Let’s take a look! Students will calculate monthly and annual expenses in a three different boarding options. They will consider farrier fees for full and partial sets of horseshoes. They will solve problems with a variable, calculate multiple numbers and compare four digit numbers. My teaching style is student oriented, empathetic and positive. I know when to push students to meet expectations and when to be firm when students are disrespectful. I also know how to address attention issues in positive ways such as self monitoring. I want students to feel confident about themselves and see value in these sessions. I use slides and interactive manipulatives to demonstrate concepts, provide practice and assess progress. I will use special education strategies to help those who struggle to participate in the class. Examples would be simplifying questions, proposing hand signals for “yes-no” questions, replacing open-ended questions with 2 choices. The font used in the slides helps students with dyslexia determine letters clearly. I welcome students who use communication devices. Students of all kinds are invited to join the class regardless of race, abilities, country of origin, and gender.
Learning Goals
By the end of this class, student will be able to list three boarding options, name common health expenses, and list typical costs of tack & equipment. They’ll be able to refer to tables for information, calculate totals and subtotals, and compare large numbers.

Teacher expertise and credentials
What do you get when you combine a teacher, a mom, a reader, a seamstress and a night owl? It's me - Mrs. Christian! That’s right, I’m a teacher mom who likes to read, sew and say up late. And I’m happy that you are checking out my profile and classes.
Let me tell you about my professional career first. I've had the privilege of teaching for 13 years in a variety of classes; 1st grade, 3rd grade, special education, preschool and now homeschool. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Education with an emphasis on cognitive disabilities from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I'm currently teaching my youngest daughter (9th gr) in my customized "homes-cool." I've been very involved with her education as she has special needs that require a one-on-one setting at a slow pace. I absolutely love it, but I feel compelled to reach more learners with my teaching style, which is why I signed on to work at Outschool.
Next, I’d like to tell you about my teaching philosophy. I believe students learn best in small groups that are 1) based on mastery and 2) focused on practical concepts. I value positive relationships between students and teachers, and I attempt to cultivate an environment that allows that to happen. I celebrate ‘different abilities’ and believe that everyone should be included.
I currently teach 2 types of math classes on Outschool. Horse Lover's Math: show students practical applications of mathematical concepts through horsemanship. Tutoring: private sessions for students in grades 3, 4, 5.
Thanks for reading my bio. I look forward to working with your students soon!
