Let’s take math to the barn! Learning about horses’ vision will put our knowledge of angles to use. Students will actively participate in measuring the monocular and binocular vision of themselves and horses. Comparing equine vision with our own deepens our understanding of how horses experience the world and why they behave the way they do in different situations. By the end of the class, students will be able to use an online protractor to measure degrees of angles, define vocabulary words listed above, discuss and use strategies to solve problems with the group, retell experiences with horses.
As a certified teacher in the State of Michigan, I have years of experience teaching math. I taught math as a 3rd grade teacher. I also taught 5th grade math as a special educator. I attended training sessions entitled “Making Sense of Mathematics for Teaching,” where I studied upper elementary math and “NHA Regional Day/Curriculum” where I studied middle school math. As a horse lover, I’ve spent many years around barns. I’ve learned horsemanship through trail rides, hands-on experiences, books, videos and even an online course through the Virtual Equestrian.
