Beginning Horse Judging: Conformation
Class experience
Beginner Level
When I was in high school, I was fortunate enough to be apart of a horse judging team. After my first lesson, I couldn’t get enough. Now, I love sharing my knowledge gained from this experience with students interested in judging, whether it be for fun or to compete! Caution: you’ll never look at horses the same way again! Class 1: Students will learn what conformation means and why it is important. We will identify the parts of a horse and their function in relation to body conformation...
4 lessons//2 Weeks
Week 1Lesson 1Class 1Students will learn what conformation means and why it is important. We will identify the parts of a horse and their function in relation to body conformation and soundness. We will end the class discussing body condition scoring and examining what each value looks like.Lesson 2Class 2Students will become familiar with hoof angles and front and back leg conformation. We will use slides with photos of different horses to distinguish which leg structure they best represent.Week 2Lesson 3Class 3Students will analyze body proportions. We will practice explaining to each other what the horses we look at have working for and against them by relating everything we've gone over in class to these horses' conformations.Lesson 4Class 4By the last meeting of this course, students will be able to judge a conformation class of horses and present a “set “ of reasons as to why each horse is ranked accordingly.
To participate in a mock judging class, students will need: .Paper .Pencil .Eraser (Students may write their notes and “reasons” on a device of choice if they prefer it.)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Hello, my name is Kat. As a student, the most memorable classes in school were the ones my teachers were passionate about teaching. When I teach, I can't help but be passionate because I get to integrate my real life experiences with each lesson....
