Horror Camp: Scary Movies and Critical Thinking
Class experience
Every week in this ongoing class, we will discuss a popular horror film, ranging from classics from the 1980s to today and everything in-between. Film viewings will take place outside of class time. All films will be available for purchase or rental on popular digital platforms such as Amazon or iTunes, for streaming on popular streaming platforms such as Netflix or Hulu, for purchase on DVD or Blu-Ray, or even available for free checkout at your local library. Students will learn how to refine and hone their analytical and critical thinking skills and create a skillset of critical thought that will be applicable to multiple disciplines.
I have an undergraduate degree in English & Allied Language Arts, as well as a Master's degree in Secondary Education with an emphasis in English and a doctorate in higher education, which gives me the relevant training and experience to teach the topic of critical thinking and film to older learners. In addition, I have a minor in Folk Studies and have taken graduate courses in Folk Studies, which gives me the experience and background to discuss the analysis of pop culture, film, and television from a cultural perspective.
Homework Offered
Students will need to watch the movies and take notes for each screening outside of class. Total work required outside of class should not take more than three hours. Students are encouraged to bring their own ideas and discussion points to class.2 - 4 hours per week outside of class

Students will need to view movies outside of class. All episodes are available for rent or purchase on digital platforms such as iTunes and Amazon Prime and may be available for streaming on such platforms as Netflix and Hulu. They may also be available for check out from your local library as they are available on DVD. Students are highly encouraged to take notes over each film to better contribute to the class discussion and receive the most educational benefit possible from the class.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Movies may contain graphic violence, depictions of murder, frightening scenes, adult content, and bad language. Parents are strongly encouraged to check out the Common Sense Media rating for each film before viewing or to otherwise reach out to the teacher with questions.
