Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Beginner Level
In this engaging Biology class, students will explore the fascinating process of how plants grow and sustain themselves by converting sunlight into energy through photosynthesis. They will learn how chlorophyll, found in plant leaves, plays a critical role in capturing solar energy. This is the crucial information found in the AP Biology exam.

The class will also examine how water is transported through xylem tissues and how carbon dioxide is absorbed through stomata—specialized cells on the undersides of leaves. Students will gain an understanding of transpiration and how it impacts a plant’s ability to maintain photosynthesis.

Throughout the course, students will observe the full life cycle of a plant, from seed to fruit. Hands-on activities include dissecting seeds, stems, flowers, and fruit to identify and label their parts. They will also plant seeds and monitor their development through each growth stage, including germination, root formation, budding, and flowering. This class offers a comprehensive, interactive approach to understanding plant biology in a way that inspires curiosity and scientific thinking.

Learning Goals

Identify and compare monocot and dicot seeds.

Understand germination and transplanting.

Distinguish between taproot and fibrous root systems.

Describe the stem structure and early plant growth.

Learn the role of leaves in photosynthesis and more.
