includedClass Experience
In this academic class we will cover the first semester of honors level high school Biology. Classes will be lecture style with a strong emphasis on student discussions and questions. Students will be encouraged to ask questions and relate the material covered to the world around them. Students will be encouraged to read the material before coming to class. This will allow for a deeper level of discussion during class and for students to ask more in-depth questions. I encourage lively discussions and fun while maintaining a high level of understanding. My teaching style is mastery through understanding, not memorization; I strive for my students to understand the material, even more difficult concepts, at mastery level without rote memorization. This understanding comes from building the learner's biologic vocabulary and understanding each week. As we build on concepts, we build a deeper understanding of the material. I also try and relate all the material to the every day world that the learners live in, after all Biology is the study of their living world! This is an honors level class and combined with Part 2 (to be offered in January 2025) will cover all material offered in a tenth grade honors level school biology class. At home labs and assignments will enrich learners understanding of the material. This class will prepare learners for future high level science classes, AP Biology, and can be used as a backbone for AP Biology exam study. Topics covered (also see Syllabus) Chemistry of Life Biomolecules Cell structure and organelles Membrane Transport Photosynthesis Cellular Respiration Mitosis Mendel Meiosis DNA RNA Transcription/Translation Gene Regulation DNA Technology
Learning Goals
In this course students will gain an in-depth understanding of Honors Biology and how the living world operates. Students will become proficient in concepts covered in an academically challenging high school biology course.
