Description
Class Experience
Students will enrich their reasoning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills to creatively learn strategies for: 1. Advanced counting and probability: Advanced counting is a lot trickier than the name implies, but careful thought, organization, experimentation, and other problem solving strategies makes counting fun and approachable. We’ll learn strategies like counting lists, tree diagrams, Venn Diagrams and more skills that are valuable in many areas of math, ranging from probability to statistics to computer science. 2. Division: Go far beyond basic division and learn new strategies and division tests to understand the steps needed to reason through division including “rules” for special quotients, dividing multiples of 10, long division, and mentally computing division efficiently without using the division algorithm (Note: This is NOT an introduction to division course. Students must already understand the relationship between multiplication and division, and be comfortable finding quotients and remainders.) 3. Logical reasoning: Being able to think logically and explain your reasoning is an important skill, particularly in mathematics, which is built on logical reasoning. Taking given information and using it to arrive at a valid conclusion is logical thinking. To think logically and solve puzzles, students use clues to figure out what they know is definitely true, and sometimes this involves figuring out that something else is definitely false.
I am a certified PK-6 Virginia teacher with additional certifications and specialization in Gifted and Talented Advanced Academics and the inquiry-based International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP). I have over 15 years of experience teaching for schools, homeschool groups, and families around the world. I believe all children have an inherent love for learning, and, because I love math and believe math literacy is an essential skill that all children can learn to the highest levels, I have specialized in math and STEAM-related education.
There will be approximately 2+ hours of homework assigned after each class. The exact time is dependent on the knowledge level of each student. Homework will include Beast Academy Online practice lessons. Some students will also want to re-read the online textbook and/or re-watch videos to assist with the practice lessons.
All supplies and materials will be provided.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Beast Academy Online Licenses: I have contracted for permission to integrate Beast Academy Online for commercial purposes in my classes - screensharing during class & independent homework assignments outside of class. Each student enrolled in this course is provided a personal license for no additional cost while enrolled in this class. Please do NOT purchase a separate account because I will expect students to use the one I provide, so I may track their progress to better inform future lessons. If you'd like to learn more about Beast Academy Online please go to https://beastacademy.com/online. BrainPOP: I have contracted for permission to integrate BrainPOP into my classes. No student account is required because this resource will be used during class via screensharing by the teacher only.
