For this class, we will take a look at the origin of Veterans Day, why we celebrate it, what the Medal of Honor is and how individuals receive the honor. In looking at a specific veteran's story, students will come to a better appreciation for the sacrifices soldiers make and gain a deeper appreciation for the holiday. Prior to our first class meeting, it is imperative that students watch the video linked and read the linked document in the confirmation email so they have the necessary...
After taking this class students will know the meaning of Veterans Day and the Medal of Honor. They will also understand the sacrifice at least 1 soldier made for this country.
In June of 2016, I attended an institute for teachers sponsored by Freedom's Foundation at Valley Forge. There they have a campus to help educate teachers and students about soldiers who fought and earned the Medal of Honor. They use the soldier's stories to teach character education. Their campus is also home to the Medal of Honor Grove, which was planted to honor all Medal of Honor recipients.
Before class students should watch the recording and read about Veterans Day through the link, both of which are provided in the confirmation email "For Learners."
Watch the recording prior to our class meeting: https://themedalofhonor.com/medal-of-honor-recipients/recipients/rubin-tibor-korean-war Read this web page prior to our class meeting: https://www.defense.gov/explore/story/article/1675470/5-facts-to-know-about-veterans-day/ ****Tibor has a thick Hungarian accent, so I recommend you watch the video with closed captioning.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
The videos that accompany this lesson contain battle scenes, including dead Korean soldiers, pictures of the Holocaust, and POW camps. These videos were created to be used by teachers for their classrooms and I believe they are appropriate for a school setting. Tibor uses some language you may not deem appropriate, and he speaks about his religious beliefs (he is Jewish). If you have a child that is sensitive to these things, I would recommend you watch it first. Having given all these warnings, I have to say that he is truly an amazing person and the story of his service is incredible.
