Class Experience

Personalized class stories are created using a simple skeleton of high-frequency words enhanced with vocabulary driven by details students contribute in class. The top 100 highest frequency Spanish words are introduced incrementally during this year-long class broken into four 10-week quarters. No prior Spanish required. New students with prior Spanish background may join in the series at any time.

The lesson is visually enhanced with easy to follow text in Spanish and English with supporting illustrations on the screen. Meaning is reinforced with movement and gestures and chants, using all learning pathways. Students are engaged as they provide story details, respond to simple questions about the story, then retell the story when they are ready. Production is never forced. When students have heard the language enough for their minds to map it, the language will be produced spontaneously.

Rereading the story is the most effective way to reinforce the language heard in class, so links are provided to the class presentations. Students are also given optional online activities giving them more opportunities to interact with the story.

WEEKLY SCHEDULE:

Each week we will continue the story, adding background or what happens next. The action will be driven by student suggestions, and these suggestions will dictate the vocabulary we will use.

Mondays: Begin a new story or add new details to the existing story.
Homework: 15 minutes of online reading comprehension activities.

Wednesdays: Finish and read the story started on Monday, add parallel characters, continue to answer questions and retell together. Homework: 15 minutes of online reading comprehension activities.

Fridays: Opportunity for student retells using class details OR students add their own details.
Play Kahoot! Do a 5-minute timed writing if time allows.

IF YOU CONTINUE WITH THE SERIES, YOU WOULD NEXT TAKE WEEKS 9 AND 10 using verbs and adjectives chosen by the students and preparing for reading your first leveled reader in Spanish.

Learning Goals

Students will be able to comprehend the basic language structures needed to tell a story, and with continued enrollment will be able to comfortably and effortlessly rewrite and retell a story without memorizing vocabulary lists or verb conjugation charts!

Teacher expertise and credentials
I teach Spanish that stays with students forever! Don’t memorize lists of words when you can acquire high-frequency vocabulary using stories.

I have ten years experience teaching PreK through High School and four years experience with Kindergarten. I have a BLA from St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland, a Spanish Major from the University of South Carolina, Beaufort and a husband from Buenos Aires, Argentina. My teenage boys are bilingual.

I teach year-round because parents love that their students can read, write and converse. ALL types of learners - visual, aural and kinesthetic - are successful in my classes where we use our imaginations to invent, illustrate and retell engaging student stories. Let me give your child the gift of a second language too!
