Welcome to Middle School Chemistry! Chemistry affects our lives every day from the gas exchange in our lungs to making carbonated beverages.

This 12 week course is an introduction to chemistry concepts that will be further studied in high school chemistry. You will learn about atomic structure, the periodic table of the elements, chemical bonds and molecules, and other chemistry concepts. We will also explore some chemistry concepts by doing lab activities.

The course syllabus lists the lessons so that you can read what we will be doing over the 12 weeks. I think learning about chemistry concepts is a great way to explore our world because chemistry plays a big part in our world.

At times, I use visual graphics such as slideshows and videos in class so that you can see the concepts we are discussing. I encourage questions and sharing any knowledge that you may have about the chemistry concepts because that's how we learn.

You will be keeping a chemistry notebook during this class. A two pocket folder with prongs to hold notebook paper may be used or a 1 inch 3 ring binder. PDFs for their notebook will be uploaded to the classroom a few days before the class.

On the days that we do the chemistry activities, you will sometimes complete the activity individually with help from me or the other class members. Other times, we will do the activity together step-by-step.

We use safe household items to do the chemistry experiments such as baking soda, vinegar, etc. The supplies for the labs are listed in a PDF that I will post in the classroom . If you have any questions about the class or the supplies, please send me a message.

Recommended Lab Equipment:
You can order from Home Science Tools, Flinn Scientific, Carolina Biological Supply , and/or Amazon.
I personally use Home Science Tools for my lab equipment, but I have also used Amazon.
Please message me if you have questions about the recommended lab equipment.

1 lab thermometer (total immersion or partial immersion, spirit- filled instead of mercury, -20 degrees C to 110 degrees C)
1 pair of chemical splash safety goggles
1 pair of safety gloves/lab gloves
100 mL glass graduated cylinder
6 glass low form 250 mL beakers
2 pipettes (medicine dropper/eye dropper)
