Class Experience
Students will practice the following core ELA skills: (CCSS aligned) - Analyze how an author's choices concerning how to structure a text, order events within it and manipulate time contribute to the overall meaning and tone of the text (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.5) - Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.1) - Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze in detail its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.2)
Required reading in advance of each session. For each novel, I provide an optional project and an optional essay prompt, which students can complete and submit for feedback.

50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 4+ hours per week outside of class.
Please be aware that many of these novels tackle difficult events and themes, such as WWII, racial violence, loss of friends, and mild drug use. Please see the list below for specifics: The Outsiders - mild drug use, some references to gang violence Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry - racial themes
