In this first nine weeks of first grade math, students will work on number recognition to 100 using a number chart, learn to write numbers to one hundred and be introduced to number families. Learners will also be introduced to greater than/less than using a number chart and seeing the relation of families to each, before and after numbers through one hundred, ordering numbers, as well as the concept of place value in the ones and tens place and how that relates to number families. We will use visualization, manipulatives, and drawing to explain place value and children will draw their own place value numbers. We will discuss the concept of addition and subtraction by using manipulatives as well as a number line, will learn addition facts with sums to five by song, learn subtraction facts with minuends of five or less.Learners will learn to count by ones, fives, and tens to fifty. We will begin to count money with pennies and dimes. Students will be introduced to telling time to the hour. We will begin to learn the days of the week and months of the year by song. Learning should be fun so class time will begin with review, followed by a math game and the teaching and application of the new concept. Though specific concepts are listed, they will be introduced gradually and reviewed often. We will work together as a class to solve math problems. Look for the next nine weeks class to follow.
