Description

Class Experience

Students will expand their comprehension skills as well as their vocabulary, while reading a fun fantasy novel.
I am certified in the state of Michigan to teach 6-12th grade English, and I have experience teaching English to all of those grades. This certification and experience give me the training and expertise to facilitate this book club, while teaching comprehension skills and helping students expand their vocabulary.
Students will read 2-3 chapters in Hollow City each week, and they will complete chapter questions, a character chart, vocabulary, and some short response questions that correspond with the reading. These chapter questions, character chart, vocabulary, and short response questions will help guide our weekly class discussion.
Learners will need their own copy of Hollow City: The Second Novel of Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children, and they will need access to the Google Classroom, where they will submit weekly work and view weekly vocabulary lists. The join code for the Google Classroom will be given before classes begin.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Learners will be assessed informally through discussion and formally through their chapter questions and the character chart. Each Google Classroom item will be graded on a points system and feedback will be given.
If course credit is needed for homeschooling purposes, please make arrangements for that before classes begin. A final grade for the course will be calculated for these purposes.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
According to CommonSenseMedia.org, parents need to know that Hollow City is part horror tale, part cosmic conflict, part teen romance, and part coming-of-age saga. Teens who love creepy stories tinged with lofty adventure, first love, time travel, and historical adventure will happily devour this. The second installment in Ransom Riggs' series that began with the best-selling Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children continues the adventures of 21st-century rich kid Jacob Portman in 1940, where he's joined forces with the "peculiar" kids who were once his late grandfather's friends. As in the first book, Hollow City uses real, often grotesque or creepy antique photos to tell its story. Book 1's frequent strong language is absent here, and sexual content is limited to flirtation and intense kissing that's described more emotionally than physically. Lurking hollows and wights have the kids in constant danger, and human and animal characters, including children and innocents, are viciously killed. Weaponry ranges from guns and knives to exploding chicken eggs.
