For eight years I researched and presented a historical American Christmas tour for a nationally acclaimed museum. I also conducted lectures and classes on holiday topics for local historical societies and private groups. Please see my bio for a full list of experience/education.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
45 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Parental Guidance >>Santa>> If your student still believes in Santa, this may not be the right class for you. If the concept of Santa comes up, I will move the class back to the topic as gently as possible. I cannot promise another student won't say they don't believe. When students ask me if I believe in Santa, I always say "I believe in the joy and magic of the holiday season". Parental Guidance >>Religion>> We may discuss the Christian or Pagan origins of some traditions, the discussion will be about the history and customs (not faith or religion). We may also discuss the "marketing" origin of some traditions, which may be different than their religious or faith origins. In this class, we will discuss the historic celebration around Christmas and Twelfth Night. We will also discuss the hidden meaning of the song, which has to do with the persecution of Catholics. I assure you I will not present historical information unless I have a reputable source. (All sources are listed in my after-class notes.) Parental Guidance >>Age Requirments>> If your learner does not meet the age requirements (9+), they will not be allowed to stay in class. I’ve taught for many years; I feel very confident in my age requirements based on the level of maturity needed for conceptual understanding and discussion.
