Come and join us as we explore the many incarnations of this Christmas Classic starting with E.T.A. Hoffman's original story, how Alexandre Dumas changed it, the reception of the Russian Ballet at the Mariinsky Theater, and, of course, George Balanchine's interpretation.

Even if you're not a fan of ballet, you've probably heard of The Nutcracker. In this one time class, we will examine the history of ballet, the origins of this ballet in Russia, and the German folklore surrounding nutcrackers. We will discuss the many different versions of this story, from the classical ballet performance to Barbie to the Nutcracker and The Four Realms. Students are encouraged to watch one version of the story before class so they are familiar with the plot and characters,...

I have been an educator on Outschool since February of 2018. I have my MBA and MHA, both of which have taught me the value of conducting research and asking questions. I have a passion for history and learning. You can usually find me in the middle of 2-3 books or watching a documentary.
Students are encouraged to watch any version of the nutcracker story before class. There are many different versions on Amazon. Any version (even Barbie or The Nutcrackers) will give the students a basic knowledge of the story and characters.
50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
There may be some Youtube videos that are seen during this class. I will share my screen and learners will not need to access them on their own.
