Description

Class Experience

Students will write an acrostic poem, by crafting first year Hogwarts goals and using the form of an acrostic poem.
I have taught poetry at the elementary and middle school levels for six years. It is a personal passion of mine and was a focus during my time in college. I took multiple creative writing course at Johns Hopkins where we worked to refine our poetry. Poetry is one of those tricky subjects for kids. Some students, when introduced to poetry, take to it immediately. Others do not. Poetry should be fun, but traditional instruction tends to suck the fun out of poetry- asking students specific analysis questions and teaching them to annotate rhyme and verse. While this is an important part of poetry, it should not be where students begin on the road to becoming poets. First, they must learn to love the art form! This is where this class comes in and stands apart from other poetry classes!
There will be no assigned homework. Howver, students are encouraged to complete their poems before they sign up for a subsequent course. I also encourage you to continue this work at home outside of our in class poems. Write some more "spells" together! Expand the types of spells they are writing by drawing on inspiration from their other favorite books.
Students will need a way to write during class. I suggest a notebook that they can turn into their spells book! Also, if they have a wand...please bring it!
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
1 hour per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
