Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
What do the lost colony of Roanoke, the great Chicago fire, Amelia Earhart's disappearance, and the DB Cooper hijacking have in common? They are all unsolved cold cases (the disappearance of Roanoke was even featured on a season of American Horror Story and the History Channel has run many documentary on Amelia Earhart's disappearance). During our time, we will examine each of these four mysterious events in detail. We will look at possible and/or likely theories already posed, talk about their viability, and then everyone will come up with their own theory, or the one they think is most likely.

But wait! There's More!!! What would a fun History course be without creating cool stuff?!?!

For Roanoke will make knife carvings in wood to represent the mysterious clue left behind (parents, if you're not comfortable with your learner using a knife, sketching is fine. I will show an example "how-to" in class and then your learner will do this under your supervision after class). Also the use of a small hammer and chisel can be helpful, but optional. For the Great Chicago Fire, we will create a piece of fire art using a burnt stick to draw the city-scape (again, if you're not comfortable with burning a fire outside of class, sketching is fine). For Amelia Earhart's disappearance, we have a paper airplane build off (I will provide multiple folding models). And for DB Cooper's hijacking, we will make a parachute that can float the small action figure of your choice safely to the ground.

This class will be very interactive. I will provide downloads that are informational and downloads that are just cool print outs. Also, I'm open to ideas from your learner on an even better end of lesson project. Creating of the first two projects will take place outside of class and shown at the beginning of the next, so an hour or so will probably be needed outside of class under parent supervision. The only other outside class work will be perfect classroom projects.

PERFECT DOWNLOADS FOR YOUR PORTFOLIOS WILL BE PROVIDED!!!

Other Details

Parental Guidance
There will be a knife carving and possible use of hammer and chisel (only if you have, it is not necessary). This is done after class, after my how to instructions under your supervision. If you are not comfortable, then a sketching will be just as good. Also, there is art done with a stick that needs to be taken in and out of a fire. If you are not comfortable with this, again a sketch will work perfectly fine.
Supply List
Two small pieces of scrap wood any 1" x 4,6,8,10,12" or plywood, or even old wooden fence wood is perfect. In fact, the best is a piece of old fence wood or something similar. One will need to be approximately 6 inches in length, the other approximately 12 inches in length.
There will be downloadable materials posted in the classroom.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

I have always been very curious and creative and I love to inspire it in kids (both my own and others) as well. I like to teach through projects, which give students a choice on the way they learn and show their understanding. I also love to teach through games and like to combine game elements in my classes.

I believe history, studied in context, to be extremely important. In fact, it's one of our best teachers. The other "subject" I believe to be of high importance is Logic. Unfortunately, logic has long been left off most curriculums. Knowing how to examine events and history through logical thinking and analysis gives us a deep, true understanding of our world.

I'm a big believer in every parent having all the need to school their children all the way through high school. So, if you are ever in doubt, let me encourage you.

My educational consulting company, It's A Potsick Education, exists to build up curious, creative learners. I do custom content/lesson design, private, online events, consulting, and more. Message me for anything you need.
