US Grade 4 - 6
We sing the Star Spangled Banner at the beginning of public sports events, public gatherings, and political events. But who wrote it and why? In this class, we will take a brief walk through the war of 1812 and look at why the people at Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor were so anxious that day in 1814. We will learn about Mary Pickersgill and why she made the mammoth 30x42ft flag for the fort. We will take a look at the life of Francis Scott Key and see what inspired him to write his famous poem. We will examine where the tune came from and when it became our national anthem.
