In this 21-week online music class, students will explore the History of Rock and Roll from research based on written and analytic assignments on topics such as Bob Dylan, Reggae, Funk, Disco, R&B, and Surf and Soul music.

Students will explore the history of Rock and Roll, starting with its definition and cultural origins. Students will analyze key characteristics like form, rhythm, and instrumentation, focusing on the electric guitar, drums, and bass. Additionally, students will understand the role of melody in shaping the genre’s distinctive sound. Through this exploration, they will gain insight into how Rock and Roll evolved and influenced modern music.

History of Rock and Roll

Students will explore the evolution of rock music, tracing its historical roots and development over time. Students will examine the genre's connection to other musical styles, including blues, jazz, and folk, and how these influences shaped the emergence of rock. Through this historical perspective, students will gain a deeper understanding of rock music's cultural significance and its lasting impact on modern music.

Evolution Perspective

Students will explore music’s revolutionary roots, examining foundational genres that shaped modern sounds. Students will delve into blues, swing, jump bands, black gospel, country, folk, and Afro-Cuban music, understanding each genre’s contribution to contemporary styles. Through this study, students will gain insights into the cultural and social significance of these genres and their lasting impact on musical evolution and movements.

Revolution Perspective

Students will examine Rhythm and Blues (R&B) from 1951 to 1959, focusing on its role in empowering Black Americans economically and socially. Students will explore the media revolution that fueled the genre’s rise, highlighting its crossover appeal and diverse sounds. Topics include the energetic tempo of fifties R&B, evolving blues themes around intimacy, Latin influences, the significance of doo-wop and Black singing groups, and gospel music’s impact on solo singing.

Rhythm and Blues (R&B) 1951-1959

Students will explore the origins and rise of Rock and Roll. Students will study key figures such as Alan Freed, who played a pivotal role in popularizing Rock and Roll, and examine the contributions of iconic artists like Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, the Everly Brothers, and Buddy Holly. 

Rock and Roll

Students will explore the evolution of rock and roll during the 1960s, focusing on the interplay between pop, rock, and Rhythm and Blues (R&B). Students will examine the integration of popular music, highlighting the emergence of girl groups, young songwriters, and influential celebrity producers who shaped the musical landscape. Additionally, students will study the transition from folk to rock music and the rise of surf music.

The Road of Rock and Roll

Students will examine the Rock Era from 1964 to 1977, focusing on its evolution and the transformative impact of key artists like Bob Dylan and The Beatles. Students will explore how Dylan's songwriting and lyrical depth revolutionized popular music, while The Beatles' innovative approaches to recording and genre-blending defined the sound of the era. 

The Rock Era: 1964-1977

Students will explore the vibrant landscape of Black music in the 1960s, focusing on the emergence of Motown and soul. Students will study Berry Gordy's role in founding Motown and its historical significance, as well as the contributions of iconic artists such as The Temptations and Marvin Gaye. The course will also cover soul music's roots in Black culture, highlighting Stax Records and influential figures like Otis Redding, Percy Sledge, Aretha Franklin, and James Brown. 

Black Music in the Sixties: Motown and Soul

Students will explore the evolution of rock music. Students will examine the contributions of influential bands like The Kinks and The Rolling Stones, as well as the emergence of power trios that highlighted rock as a soloist's genre, focusing on Eric Clapton and Cream, and the groundbreaking work of Jimi Hendrix. The course will also cover the rise of heavy metal in the seventies, featuring bands such as Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Led Zeppelin.

Rock Music

Students will explore San Francisco’s diverse rock scene in the 1960s, focusing on its ties to counterculture and the hippie movement. Students will examine the contributions of iconic bands like Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, and Creedence Clearwater Revival, as well as The Grateful Dead’s cultural influence on the era’s music. Additionally, students will delve into the rise of Latin rock through Carlos Santana’s work and the genre-blending sounds of Sly and The Family Stone.

San Francisco and the Diversity of Rock

Students will explore rock music as an art form, focusing on its darker aspects. Students will study influential bands like The Doors and The Velvet Underground, examining how they challenged norms and elevated rock to serious art. The course will cover rock opera and glam rock, highlighting the theatrical elements that shaped artistic expression. Additionally, students will investigate the intersection of rock art and technology.

Rock as Art

Students will explore the role of the singing songwriter in rock music, focusing on artists known for their melodic compositions and meaningful lyrics. Students will study the works of Carole King, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Randy Newman, Paul Simon, and Neil Young, analyzing how each artist blends personal storytelling with musical innovation. The course will emphasize the emotional depth and artistic integrity these songwriters bring to rock.

The Singing Songwriter: Rock, Melody, and Meaning

Students will examine Black popular music in the early seventies, focusing on the evolution of Motown and its influential artists. Students will study The Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye, and Stevie Wonder, analyzing their contributions to the sound and style of the era. The course will also explore the Philadelphia Sound and the works of Curtis Mayfield and Al Green, highlighting how these artists blended soul, funk, and R&B to create music that resonated with cultural and social movements of the time.

Black Popular Music in the Early Seventies

Students will explore mainstream rock in the seventies, focusing on the intersection of media, money, and technology that drove its growth. Students will examine the impact of iconic artists like Elton John, Freddie Mercury with Queen, and bands like The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac, who blended rock with pop and country influences. The course will also cover how groups like Chicago and Steely Dan infused jazz into rock, and the forward-looking styles of Bruce Springsteen and Aerosmith.

Mainstream Rock in the Seventies

Students will explore the global influence of reggae, funk, and disco in the seventies. Students will study reggae’s rise through artists like Jimmy Cliff and Bob Marley, punk funk led by George Clinton and Earth, Wind & Fire, and the disco phenomenon through figures like Donna Summer and The Village People. The course will highlight how each genre, though distinct, shaped music and culture worldwide, offering unique perspectives and rhythms that enriched popular music.

Reggae, Funk, and Disco: View from the Outside

Students will dive into punk music and its impact, examining its raw energy and rebellious ethos through bands like The Ramones and The Clash. The course will also cover punk’s evolution into new wave, studying artists such as Talking Heads, Elvis Costello and The Attractions, and Devo. Through this exploration, students will see how punk and new wave challenged musical norms and shaped future genres.

Punk and Its Aftermath

Students will explore the rise of electronica and rap, focusing on electronic music's advancements like the audio CD and MIDI technology that enabled new soundscapes. Students will study electronica’s influence on dance music and its evolution as a popular genre. In rap, students will examine the contributions of pioneers like Grandmaster Flash and Public Enemy, including impactful tracks like "1 Million Bottlebags," and the emergence of gangsta rap.

Electronica and Rap

Students will examine the new sound of pop in the eighties, focusing on the influence of MTV and music videos in transforming pop music's reach and visual style. Students will study the era's icons like Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Prince, as well as the unique fusion of post-punk and post-disco in their work. The course will also explore Black pop’s rise with artists like Tina Turner and Luther Vandross and the concept of the pop diva, including early performances by Christina Aguilera.

New Sound of Pop in the Eighties

Students will explore rock's evolution since 1980, examining new pop rock through bands like The Police and punk-inspired pop from artists like Van Halen. Studentswill study the impactful contributions of Bruce Springsteen and U2, as well as heavy metal’s growth with Metallica. The course will also analyze how bands like The Dave Matthews Band brought fresh perspectives to rock and roll, renewing the genre with unique sounds and lyrical depth.

Renewing Rock: Rock Since 1980

Students will dive into alternative music’s growth, beginning with R.E.M. as pioneers of the genre. Students will explore the infusion of funk and metal by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the impactful voices of female artists like Ani DiFranco with songs like 32 Flavors, and Radiohead’s contribution to art rock in the nineties. The course will also cover the post-punk movement's evolution with bands such as Sonic Youth and Green Day.

Alternative Music

Students will analyze the trajectory of 21st-century rock, focusing on technology’s impact, the effects of globalization and industry regulation, and the genre’s fragmentation and fusion with other styles. The course will address rock’s evolution at a critical juncture, examining how rhythm, melody, and innovation continue to shape its identity in a rapidly changing musical landscape.
